EMF Testing / Consultants
Electromagnetic Field Testing and Inspections (EMF/EMR)
Do you need EMF Testing? Have employee complaints or need a second professional opinion regarding EMF exposure? Is an FCC survey for cellular antennas on your roof required before a construction project? Is the city council concerned that telecommunication companies are not in compliance with FCC emissions & exposure standards? Are you purchasing a building near a power line and curious about magnetic fields? Healthy Building Science offers professional EMF testing, consulting and surveys for magnetic fields, electric fields, high-voltage transients, radio frequency radiation (RFR) and ionizing radiation.
We support two primary groups of customers. Some require regulatory testing to ensure compliance with OSHA or FCC allowable emissions standards, and others are curious or sensitive and trying to determine what is present and how to reduce exposure. Magnetic field, ionizing radiation, and RF compliance surveys are larger projects that require specialized equipment and formal reports referencing allowable regulatory levels. Most working environments do not exceed allowable limits. Usually a local utility provider, like PG&E for power lines (magnetic fields) or Verizon for cellular service (radio frequency radiation), will provide their own surveys and reports free of charge. However, there are times a property owner may want a second opinion or be interested in best practices and tips for mitigation in order to further reduce exposure levels below allowable limits. Our professional EMF testing and consulting services start with a survey, reporting onsite measurements and may include detailed instructions on mitigating and further reducing exposures.
Other electromagnetic radiation (EMR) clients are electrically sensitive and have difficulty sleeping, get headaches, ringing in the ears, or experience other symptoms from electrosmog. Symptoms of electromagnetic sensitivity can be debilitating. We help EMF-sensitive clients create more natural and health-supporting spaces by reducing artificial electromagnetic fields (EMFs) in their home or work environments. Electromagnetic radiation is invisible and can be extremely complex. Without knowing sources or understanding mitigation strategies, do-it-yourself approaches can do more harm than good. Professional EMF testing is important.
Professional consulting and pre and post-mitigation EMF testing provide certainty and peace of mind. Most EMF mitigation is zero cost or even saves money, while some may be more involved and include remodeling, painting, applying shielding window films, etc.. Mitigation is not always necessary but if required, Healthy Building Science EMF consultants can provide specific instructions and help with mitigation efforts.
EMF Consultant San Francisco
HBS has the training, necessary measurements, and protocols (FCC, OSHA, Building Biology– adopted from Germany) to evaluate your building for EMF and suggest practical, effective mitigation strategies. We regularly identify wiring errors (electrical code violations) that cause elevated magnetic fields in buildings. Working with electricians we are able to identify and correct wiring errors and magnetic fields are instantly reduced to normal background levels. Radio frequency (RF) mitigation is accomplished by installing materials such as screens, paints, and foils in walls, floors and roof assemblies. Costs and time on site vary depending on the location and size of each building. We consult on agency buildings, hospitals, schools, multi-family, and single-family homes, offices, and manufacturing facilities.
Electromagnetic Field (EMF/EMR) Projects
We provide expert EMF testing for all building types and focus primarily around the San Francisco Bay Area.
- Radio Frequency testing for San Francisco schools
- Magnetic field inspection for a San Jose affordable housing development site
- San Rafael FCC compliance survey for a public building
- Napa EMF survey for a public building
- Oakland EMF testing and home inspection
- Los Altos Low-EMF design consulting for an existing home
- San Francisco EMF consulting for a new remodel
- Berkeley school EMF survey
What do EMF Surveys Include?
EMF inspections identify significant internal and external sources of EMF and RF exposure, determine if utilities are carrying stray current, detect wiring code violations leading to elevated magnetic fields, etc. The scope of work may include testing for “dirty electricity” or “electromagnetic interference,” and specifying line conditioning equipment. Surveys includes testing for low-frequency electric and magnetic fields, and radio frequency (RF) radiation on the four corners of the site and building as well as at all “high use” areas. Discussion and possible testing of basic approaches to mitigation are included. Detailed instructions and installation support are available upon request.
EMF Commercial Survey & Site Evaluation
We traverse the site and collect measurements for AC magnetic fields and/or Radio Frequency (RF) radiation. Readings are collected at a minimum of the 4 corners of a property. Upon request and if required by the project, we walk transects across the property collecting measurements at specific locations. If measurements are required more than 8 feet off the ground, a cherry-picker or scissor-lift is rented to collect elevated measurements. Depending on project requirements reporting is done via email or transcribed on an aerial photograph.
