EMF Health Effects Study Released

Everyone always asks me – whether they’re skeptics or not – where can I read peer-reviewed, published studies about EMF health effects? “Are there really studies linking magnetic fields and radio frequency radiation to cancer?”  Well… this is it!  Here is a big dose of reality for all the naysayers.

EMF Health Effects – BioInitiative Report 2012

EMF Health Effects – BioInitiative Report 2012

This excerpt from the updated BioIniative Website:

“PUBLICATION DATE:  December 31, 2012

WHERE: The BioInitiative 2012 Report will be published at www.bioinitiative.org.  Free download.

WHAT IS IT:   A report by 29 independent scientists and health experts from around the world* about possible risks from wireless technologies and electromagnetic fields.  It updates the BioInitiative 2007 Report.

WHAT IT COVERS:  The science, public health, public policy and global response to the growing health issue of chronic exposure to electromagnetic fields and radiofrequency radiation in the daily life of billions of people around the world.  Covers brain tumor risks from cell phones, damage to DNA and genes, effects on memory, learning, behavior, attention; sleep disruption and cancer and neurological diseases like Alzheimer’s disease.  Effects on sperm  and miscarriage (fertility and reproduction), effects of wireless on the brain development of the fetus and infant, and effects of wireless classrooms on children and adolescents is addressed. Mechanisms for biological action and public health responses in other countries are discussed.  Therapeutic use of very low intensity EMF and RFR are addressed.

WHAT IS NEW: This update covers about 1800 new studies reporting bioeffects and adverse health effects of electromagnetic fields (powerlines, electrical wiring, appliances and hand-held devices) – and wireless technologies (cell and cordless phones, cell towers, WI-FI, wireless laptops, wireless routers, baby monitors, surveillance systems, wireless utility meters (‘smart meters’), etc.

*The BioInitiative 2012 Report has been prepared by 29 authors from ten countries*,  ten holding medical degrees (MDs), 21 PhDs, and three MsC, MA or MPHs.  Among the authors are three former presidents of the Bioelectromagnetics Society, and five full members of BEMS.  One distinguished author is the Chair of the Russian National Committee on Non-Ionizing Radiation.   Another is a Senior Advisor to the European Environmental Agency.”

EMF Health Effects

I encourage everyone to read this culmination of up-to-date, peer-reviewed, published studies linking EMF and RF to a broad array of health problems. With all these studies it is overdue for our regulatory agencies to take note and get serious about more stringent, enforceable exposure limits! If you buy organic food or worry about air or water quality… perhaps this report will make you equally concerned about the electrosmog we are blanketed in every day.

  1. […] We are routinely called in by parents, teachers, and administrators who are concerned about EMF in schools. This usually happens because someone realizes a new cell tower, or a new parent discovers a classroom is right by a power line or transformer, or someone has “a meter” and found some alarming levels they would like to have confirmed and/or mitigated. We’ve done EMF inspections for private schools and public schools, cozy kindergarten and cold university classrooms, and even a local school district administrative building (cell antennas on rooftop). There is obviously concern among citizens and a growing body of scientific evidence linking EMF to health effects. […]

    Rosa Socia,

Also consider other environmental hazards as well. In the winter, people close windows and cook on the stove, filling their house with extremely poisonous exhaust. Check stove and boiler ventilation. Two open windows or vents are required, one for inlet one for outlet. Your message is January, so health could be due to exhaust problems (as well as EMF etc).

Peter Sierck’s outfit, ET&T, offers most of the services we do. Peter is an established building biologist and respected across the country for being a top-notch expert in environmental consulting. Someday we hope to have an office down there, but in the meantime I’m happy to refer work to ET&T. Best of luck, Alex

Thank you for your time 🙂
I live in Mexico at the border with California. Do you happen to know anyone who provides your type of services in San Diego California?

    Hello Rosa,

I’m very sorry to hear about your daughter’s health decline. Hopefully you’ll be able to get to the bottom of things and turn the symptoms around for a full recovery.

You may want to have an expert assess the home, since just buying a meter (you really need 4+) will not give you enough information to make decisions about how to proceed. You can see if there’s anyone in your area on this website listing Building Biology Environmental Consultants. This is presently the only group offering EMF training and certifications in the US.

As for meters it’s a really big discussion. We should do a blog on this since so many people ask. In a thorough EMF Inspection we measure low frequency electric and magnetic fields (EMF), high-voltage transients (“dirty electricity”), and Radio Frequency (RF) radiation. In some cases we also look at ionizing radiation using a geiger counter. In the meter-world, you get what you pay for. Many folks buy from LessEMF, and I really trust anything sold by a fellow Building Biologist at Safe Living Technologies.

    Best of luck,
    Alex

    Hello:
I am very concerned about my 11 year old daughter. She has been very healthy all her life until a couple of weeks ago when she has suddenly developed symptoms of radiation poisoning. I live in Vermont and I am suspecting that the electromagnetic field around our home is high. She has been nauseous and sick to her stomach with headaches. My question to you is: Is this something you know about? EMF affecting children? I think I will purchase an inexpensive EMF detector to see what levels we are exposed to. Any suggestions is well received.
    Thank you very much.

    Hi Charlie,
Thank you for taking the time to comment. I would respectfully have to disagree with you, and add that saying there isn’t evidence of harm from EMF/EMR is like saying global climate change isn’t happening. Yes, you can find some studies showing no effect… but the overwhelming majority of well-done research is pointing toward a single answer… there is cause for concern. The nay-sayers and critics of global warming, and dangers from lead, asbestos, and tabacco all echoed the same thing, “we need more research, the research is inconclusive, making change would unfairly hurt business,” and people suffer as a result. I believe in exercising the precautionary principal, and I believe there is sufficient evidence to warrant concern over common household levels of low frequency electric and magnetic fields (EMF), high-voltage transients (“dirty electricity”), and radio frequency (RF) radiation.
    Thanks for reading,
    Alex
